Resin Artist by day and DJ by night, Jeremy Kay offers us a respite from reality and lets us into his vibrant world of art and expressionism. We chat to the Sydney-based creator about his vividly unique work and artistic process.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
These days I find most of my inspiration in my dreams. My best creative flow usually comes right as the sun goes up and the colours and moods of my dreams are still freshly printed in my mind.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SPACE IN WHICH YOU TYPICALLY CREATE?
I love my studio. It’s an old, big open garage turned into a funky-looking atelier. It’s ideally placed 100m from the beach, so friends and neighbours come in and hang out there every day. I also invite artists to come and use the space – at the moment I have a very talented friend making beautiful jewellery.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW, ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS YOU CAN SHARE WITH US?
So many exciting projects for 2021, including a photo-documentary book in collaboration with my favourite local film photographers, a solo show, a series of workshops and much more.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESS OF CREATING YOUR ART?
My work could be categorised as abstract expressionism, however I like to think that I’m on a constant experimental evolution. I’m not interested in producing a series of identical works. Rooted in the psychedelic and dreamlike feels, I am always experimenting in order to perfect ‘flow state’ – meaning all my pieces are almost completely improvised on the spot, giving birth to unique chemical reactions and unexpected effects.
WHAT'S THE BIGGEST IMPACT 2020 HAS HAD ON YOU?
2020 definitely had its fair share of challenges, but it’s also been my best year for personal growth. Streamlining my focus and this rather new career path is a defining moment for rest of my life.
WHO OR WHAT IS BRINGING YOU GOOD ENERGY / VIBES RIGHT NOW?
My beautiful friends have always been the source of my relentless positive energy. On top that, springtime is in the air and it brings beautiful colours into our world.
